What is an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps are a form of renewable technology, used to generate free heat for both domestic and commercial properties. These heat pumps will extract warmth from the air even down to very cold temperatures, before sending it to the home central heating unit.

The heat pump technology works in a similar way to fridges. Of course, in these instances though, heat is extracted from the inside and transferred out. Air source heat pumps have an excellent efficiency and will even extract heat from temperatures down to -15° C. This makes then fully operational throughout the year in almost every area of the country.

Heat is extracted from the air and transferred into fluid to pass through a compressor. This works to increase the temperature of heat for your home or business.

In the air source heat pump market there are two main designs:

  • Air-to-air systems
  • Air-to-water systems

The air-to-water systems are the most popular in the UK and will provide energy for your home’s wet central heating. Working at lower temperatures, the air source pump is perfectly suitable for underfloor heating.

The benefits of air source heat pumps

There’s a growing popularity in air heat pumps because of a range of benefits suited to every homeowner. When compared to ground source heat pumps, air pumps are leaps and bounds ahead in popularity terms because of a series of advantages.

  • Cheaper energy bills

With air source heat pumps, the main benefit is that they’ll help to reduce your energy bills by hundreds of pounds every year. Heating accounts for up to 60% of annual fuel bills, so using an air source pump to generate free heat will slash this expense. And with little to no maintenance required, you’ll benefit from cheaper bills for 25 years and more.

  • Earn an income

There’s not just the potential to reduce energy bills with the heat pump. In the summer of 2013 homeowners are expected be able to earn an income with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Predictions from experts in renewable energy claim this payment will be around £850 every year, giving a fantastic opportunity to make a substantial profit on your initial investment.

  • Cut CO2 emissions

Air source heat pumps are known as a ‘green’ technology. What does this mean? Essentially they’ll reduce your home’s CO2 emissions by generating environmentally friendly energy. Depending on the type of fuel you replace with the heat pump will decide the amount you save, so look at the table below to see both your possible CO2 and financial savings, according to the Energy Saving Trust:

Facts & Figures You’ll Love To Share

  • A heat pump is capable of generating enough heat to reduce your annual energy bills by up to £650.
  • The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive will pay out hundreds of pounds a year for the renewable heat produced.
  • Cash grants of up to £2,000 are available to help fund the purchase of heat pumps.
  • As gas and electricity prices continue to rise, heat pumps will provide greater savings for the years to come.
